DeepDive supports up to **two Live Translator (Interpreter)** in a moderated session. Interpreters translate the conversation in real time through dedicated audio channels, allowing **Observers** to listen in their preferred language, while still following everything happening in the main interview.

Interpreters join the session as **Observers**.

A **Moderator** can assign them the **Translator** (Interpreter) role and select either the **Interpreter 1** or **Interpreter 2** audio channel.

**Note:** Only Observers who join the session through a Computer can be assigned the **Translator** role. Observers who join by phone cannot have their role changed.

## **How Interpreter Channels Work**

A DeepDive session includes:

- **Main Audio** – The original conversation between the Moderator and Participant.
- **Interpreter 1** – Live translated audio from Interpreter 1.
- **Interpreter 2** – Live translated audio from Interpreter 2.

**Moderators** and **Participants** **always remain on the Main Audio channel**. Only **Observers** can switch between the available audio channels to listen to either the original conversation or a translated version. Translators can always hear the Main Audio channel so they can interpret the conversation. Once assigned to an interpreter channel by the Moderator, **Translators cannot switch audio channels themselves**; only the Moderator can change their assigned channel.

## **Assigning an Interpreter**

Interpreters always join the session as **Observers**.

To assign an interpreter:

1. Open the **Attendees** panel.
2. Locate the Observer you want to assign as an interpreter.
3. Click the **Role** dropdown.
4. Select **Translator**.
5. Choose an available channel:
  - **Interpreter 1**
  - **Interpreter 2**
6. Click **Update Role**.

**Note:** Only one interpreter can be assigned to each channel, with a maximum of **two interpreters** per session.

## **Example Scenario**

Suppose your interview is conducted in **English**, but some stakeholders prefer to listen in their native language.

| | |
| --- | --- |
| **Role** | **Language** |
| Moderator | English |
| Participant | English |
| Interpreter 1 (Audio Channel 1) | Korean |
| Interpreter 2 (Audio Channel 2) | Japanese |
| Observer A (on Audio Channel 1) | Prefers Korean |
| Observer B (on Audio Channel 2) | Prefers Japanese |

The **Moderator** conducts the interview with the **Participant** in English on the **Main Audio** channel. Both **interpreters** listen to the conversation and provide live translations within the respective audio channels.

Only Observers can switch to their preferred audio channel at any time without affecting the interview.

### **Available Audio Channels**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| **Audio Channel** | **What You Hear** |
| **Main Channel** | Original conversation between the Moderator and Participant (English) |
| **Interpreter 1** | Live Korean interpretation |
| **Interpreter 2** | Live Japanese interpretation |

**Note:** Only one audio channel can be listened to at a time by an Observer.

## **Who Can Switch Audio Channels?**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| **User Role** | **Available Audio Channels** |
| **Observer** | Original audio / Interpreter 1 / Interpreter 2 |
| **Moderator** | Main Channel |
| **Participant** | Main Channel (default interview audio) |

**Example:** If **Observer A** understands Korean, they can switch to **Interpreter 1** to hear the live Korean translation. If **Observer B** prefers Japanese, they can switch to **Interpreter 2**. Meanwhile, the Moderator and Participant continue speaking in English on the Main Channel without interruption.
