In moderated user research, the moderator (i.e., researcher) will be able to communicate directly with the participant (i.e., users). The moderator will guide the participant to complete some tasks on the product (e.g., App, website) to see if there are any questions or difficulties that arise when the participant is trying out the product. Based on the participant's behavior observed (i.e., body language and facial expression), the moderator will ask some probing questions to explore and gain insights into the reasoning behind the observed behavior and motives.

This type of research helps researchers gain in-depth and detailed knowledge about users' preferences effectively and further helps companies to iterate their products and improve their usability of the product. However, the cost of a moderated research session is relatively high, and it requires a longer preparation time.

UXArmy’s DeepDive helps you to bring your physical research session to remote. Instead of having only the moderator and the participant in a session, you can have observers and notetakers watching the session from the side with DeepDive.
