## **What is A/B Testing**

A/B Testing also known as split testing is a user experience research method used to compare two versions of a design or visual stimulus to understand which performs better.

The variable can be image design homepage layout UI screens copy or navigation.

Version A is the original version and Version B is the variation. Users interact with both versions and their feedback helps identify which design performs better based on usability, clarity and preference.

## **How A/B Testing Works**

In A/B testing participants are exposed to two versions of a design.

- Version A represents the control design
- Version B represents the variation

Participants interact with each version and provide feedback through rating or survey questions.

Finally participants compare both versions and select the one they prefer.

This helps identify which design performs better and supports decision making.

## **Methods to Run A/B Testing**

UXArmy allows multiple ways to run A/B testing for image design and visual stimulus

- **Using Multiple Choice Task**
- **Using Image Task with Group**
- **Using Prototype Task**

## **A/B Testing Using Multiple Choice Task (Survey Task)**

In this method, participants will be able to vote for their preferred design and give feedback and their reasoning verbally. You’ll only need to create a “Survey Task” and upload the images you’d like to A/B test for participants to view and vote.

### **Steps**

#### **Create Multiple Choice Task**

- Select Multiple Choice Task
- Write your A/B comparison question
- Turn off Allow Multiple Selections
- Enable Add Images
- Enable Use Image as options
- Upload Image A and Image B

#### **Key Settings**

- Images act as answer options
- Participants can click directly on images to select
- Supports up to 10 images
- Each image should be within size limits(5MB)

## **A/B Testing Using Image Task with Group**

This is the most recommended approach because participants evaluate each design separately before comparison

In this method, participants will go through 2 different designs in 2 Image Tasks and will share their feedback on their preference in a separate Question Task. Below is an example of your task sequence.

### **Create Group for Version A**

#### **Step 1:- Add Image Task**

- Add Image Task inside a Group
- Upload Image A
- Add clear task instructions
- Ask participants to review the design carefully

#### **Step 2:- Add Rating Scale**

- Add Rating Scale inside the same Group
- Example question
“How visually appealing and professional does this design feel”
- Use 5 point scale
 1 Very Poor
 2 Poor
 3 Average
 4 Good
 5 Excellent

### **Duplicate Group for Version B**

- Duplicate the entire Group
- Replace Image A with Image B
- Keep instructions and rating questions exactly the same

This ensures fair comparison between A/B versions

### **Add Final A/B Comparison Task**

#### **Create Multiple Choice Task**

- Turn off Allow Multiple Selections
- Enable Add Images
- Enable Use Image as options
- Upload Image A and Image B

#### **Ask Comparison Question**

- Which design do you prefer A or B
- Which design feels more useful or easier to use
- Ask participants to explain why
- Add the images you used in the previous 2 image tasks (each image up to 2 MB)

**A/B Testing Using Prototype Task**

This method is useful when

- Images are large
- You want slideshow or interactive experience

In this method, you can make a slideshow with a simple prototype. Participants will be able to view and switch between the images within the prototype, and they can select and feedback on their preferred design in follow-up question tasks.

Here is a [template of the Prototype File](https://www.figma.com/proto/o36w3GoGYXHqeMQOt6MYx7/Template-A%2FB-Test-Images-(Public)?node-id=2%3A7&scaling=min-zoom&page-id=0%3A1&starting-point-node-id=2%3A7) with 2 versions of the image design. You can copy this template for your testing.

Add a Prototype task containing the images you want to test

Add a Question task with the images shown in the Prototype task as a follow up and group it with the Prototype task
