Tree testing is a UX research technique to evaluate a proposed information structure on a site by asking participants to find particular items from a menu structure. It is usually conducted in the early stages of the design process, after a card sorting session.

Researchers use tree testing to assess the site structure built based on the findings in a card sorting test, and also to see whether the site structure they’ve come up with is easy for users to navigate and retrieve the information they want.
